الملخص :

Despite having had a relatively short experience in teaching EFL in Syria, I have noticed many problems and difficulties that face children at the different stages of learning English as a foreign language. This has encouraged me to look closely and more specifically into this phenomenon at linguistic centers in which a particular system of teaching and learning is followed. This current study aims to investigate the various difficulties Syrian children may encounter; whether these difficulties are in pronunciation, words order and sentence formation, or spelling and grammar.

All of the (35) participants are children who learn English at special linguistic centers to know it as a new foreign language that has become a main component and a basic need that everyone should know well. The three groups of participants are of different ages and they study English by attending courses of special book series at linguistic centers; in addition to schools. So, they should have reasonable knowledge of English. However, it has been proved, through this study, that this is untrue.

One basic method of data collection has been adopted in this study, recording. No research has been published on Syrian children difficulties in English learning (especially those who learn it at linguistic centers). That is why this research is considered a pioneer in this respect. The weak point of this study is that data have been analyzed in a descriptive rather than an empirical way since no linguistic labs or modern analytical techniques have been used.

This dissertation will mainly examine how Syrian children deal with different English sounds by reading or pronouncing them; They mispronounce English sounds within words. This can be done by identifying and naming the difficulties in test number 1; the pronunciation test. It is also about how Syrian children have incorrect sentence formation rules, and this can be seen by discussing words-order test of group number 2. In addition, this study try to shed the light on the difficulties that Syrian children face in spelling and grammar; although they are at an advanced phase. This is shown clearly by identifying the difficulties that they face in test number 3. After identifying the difficulties of these three types of tests, the study moves to investigate the reasons behind these difficulties and mistakes by discussing each test clearly and separately. Most of  the investigated results will show how children’s mother tongue plays a role in affecting the way they learn and the difficulties they face.

Finally, this study provides insights and helps EFL linguistic centers to develop learning strategies that will reduce and eliminate future difficulties in learning a foreign language for Arab children, in general, and Syrian ones, in particular.
